Healing your inner child while navigating the environment that caused the wound requires more than positive thinking—it requires honoring your nervous system's deepest boundary alarms.
You are sitting at the kitchen table, holding a warm cup of coffee, consciously trying to regulate your breathing. Across from you is the person—or the environment, or the relentless dynamic—that broke you open years ago. The words spoken are casual, perhaps even polite, but beneath the surface of the conversation, your heart rate is accelerating. Your jaw is tight. In a matter of seconds, despite all the books you've read, the podcasts you've consumed, and the deep inner work you've committed to, you feel yourself shrinking back into a ten-year-old child. You are trying to heal. But your inner child is still standing inside the burning house. This is one of the most agonizing, silent struggles the women I coach face: attempting to do profound, reparative soul work while still actively living with, or intimately entangled with, the source of their original pain. It could be a familial home you've had to return to, a marriage you are navigating your way through, or a generational caretaking role you cannot simply walk away from. When you are in this position, the popular wellness advice to "just protect your peace" or "distance yourself" feels not only hollow, but genuinely insulting. You cannot simply distance yourself from the room you are sleeping in. You cannot block the number of the person sitting across the dinner table. "Surviving and living are not the same thing. And you cannot vibrate higher from a place of survival." In my own life, and in the coaching conversations I have with women navigating this exact tension, I have seen this precise tension create immense shame.
